Enamel science from a Tübingen research lab, now on UK shelves.
In the 1990s, most toothpaste innovation was about flavour and stripes. In a dental research lab at the University of Tübingen, a German dentist and researcher was asking a different question: instead of only cleaning teeth, could a toothpaste help put minerals back into them?
That question became ApaCare.
A discovery that started in Tübingen
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rainer Hahn founded Cumdente in Tübingen in 1997, working out of the university dental school. His field was the mineral that teeth are made from.
Enamel is mostly hydroxyapatite, a form of calcium phosphate. The idea behind ApaCare was to make that same mineral in the lab, at a controlled particle size, so it could be carried in a toothpaste, settle onto the tooth surface and bond to it, filling in the microscopic roughness left by everyday wear.
ApaCare launched in 2008 as one of the first prophylaxis ranges built around this technology, which the brand calls liquid enamel. Prof. Hahn was awarded the Miller Prize in 1996, dentistry's highest German scientific honour, for earlier work in polymer ceramics.

German precision, brought to the UK
Every ApaCare formulation starts in the lab. The hydroxyapatite is sized, purified and stabilised so that it behaves predictably on the tooth surface and the results are carefully measured.
The approach has held up outside the company as well. In June 2026, Cumdente was named a TOP 100 Innovator, an independent German award for the country's most innovative mid-sized companies.
