What is hydroxyapatite? Hydroxyapatite is the natural mineral that makes up around 97% of tooth enamel. In toothpaste, hydroxyapatite particles deposit onto the tooth surface and bond with it, helping to fill microscopic surface roughness and smooth and compact the enamel as you brush.

What does fluoride do? Fluoride works differently: it strengthens the enamel that's already there, forming fluorapatite in the outer layer and making the surface more resistant to everyday acid attack. Fluoride has the longer track record and the largest evidence base for reducing tooth decay, which is why NHS guidance recommends a fluoride toothpaste as the everyday baseline for adults and children.
